New challenges with COVID-19

The Covid 19 crisis has presented families with numerous challenges around distance learning

Once the Shelter-in-Place took effect, families were faced with the new challenge of educating their children at home. As if this was not stressful enough, many parents were trying to juggle this while working full-time at home or outside the home, as an essential worker. Fortunately, Julie did not miss a beat and was able to support her students virtually without much interruption to their schooling, because she has been providing homeschooling/online learning support to students and families for the past four years.

What services we offer:

Flourish Education Services uses a personalized, integrative, and restorative approach to supporting children.

There are a variety of factors that can interfere with that learning. These roadblocks are often disguised as behavior issues such as task avoidance, tantrums, whining, apathy, and more. These behaviors throw up a smoke screen which further erodes students’ self-esteem and learning.

Frequently, these behaviors are at their worst during the primary grades (K-3) when students are learning critical, foundational skills for reading, writing, and math.

The gap between a student's expectations and skills only compounds as they gets older. When a student moves on to the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, and lack the skills to be able to perform at grade level they give up trying because they just do not see the point. Students continue to get socially promoted (moved ahead despite not being able to do grade-level work) and fall further behind. Too often, students start to feel disconnected to the learning process and start to feel lost.

Many of the issues that a child has can be resolved with personalized strategies that meet the needs of that child. Sometimes, that means adjustments to what is happening at home and in the classroom. Flourish takes into account that the strategies need to be do-able and practical for children, families, and teachers.

Building a Plan for Your Child

  • The first step is a 30 minute initial consultation with the parent(s) to find out what is going on with the child's current situation to assess if Flourish Education Services is a good match to help the child. There is no charge for this initial consultation. After determining the primary needs of the child, I will  propose a plan that has options.
  • The second step is getting to know the child and developing a relationship of trust and understanding. Children have a keen sense of who their champions are - who is on their side. Without trust, nothing will move forward.
  • The third step is to develop strategies that are based on the needs of your child. This is the part that falls apart if an educator doesn't have the experience, knowledge, and sense of what children need. This is where my vast and varied experience and knowledge along with my sense of children come into play. Think about it like how a chef knows just what flavor a dish needs to make it scrumptious.
  • The fourth step is to implement and adjust the plan as needed. I will continually be assessing the effectiveness of the strategies to fine tune and/or keep up with the child as he/she grows. Sometimes, it's best to focus on a few things at a time, so as to not overwhelm the child, and add learning/behavior targets slowly as the child becomes more confident.
